This one sends my emotions around a little as I write.

While making this piece, I had all the windows of the workshop open, letting in the fresh air while I was heating and bending the piece. Just after I finished the final bend, a butterfly flew into the workshop. It stayed only briefly, then fluttered away.

My beautiful childhood friend Chalini loved butterflies.

We lost Chalini in early 2020, and I think about her all the time. Whenever I see a butterfly, I always find myself saying, “Hey Charli.”

It wasn’t until I was photographing the finished sculpture that I stepped back and realised what I was looking at.

A butterfly.

This sculpture began as a custom order, but in that moment I knew I wanted to make it a repeat piece, something that could find its way into other homes, and be loved by many people.

There is a softness and gentleness to its form that makes Chalini feel like the only name it could have. A little piece of the kindness and beauty I will always associate with her.
